Govardhan puja or Annakut is a Hindu festival in which Hindu people offers a large variety of vegetarian food to the to lord of Mountain Govardhan. Govardhan pooja initiated during the childhood of Krishna in the Village Braj.
The Pooja takes place just after next day of Happy Diwali in all parts of country.
Goverdhan pooja Origin and Why it is Celebrated?
You might don’t know when Krishna was living in Braj, he lifted Mount Goverdhan in the middle of Braj Village to protect the village from rain and thunderstorm. At start Govardhan was used to celebrate autumn season by paying respect to Indra who is god of rain but later on Krishna changed this trend.
Krishna desired that the villagers not pray to distant gods but rather give appreciation to avatar of God present before them. So he remark the festival that paid respect to Annakut by preparing a ‘giriyajna’.
How Govardhan is Celerated ?
Every family create a image of Giriraj Govardhan from cow dung and decorate it so that it can represent Govardhan baghwan. Someone from a cow-herding caste officiates the ritual, circling the hill with a cow and a bull, followed by families in the village.
There are variants about celebration of Annakut Pooja:
One ritual involves making small mounds of cow dung or dirt symbolizing Annakut. Later they are decorated with flowers and people do Pratikrama of the Govardhan Parvat with prayers.
Mainly Govardhan Pooja is mainly identified as by Krishna Baghwan who had lifted the mountain to protect people of Braj.
